Dubai - Everything I had heard about Dubai turned out to be true - in spades! It’s one of the United Arab Emirates which have historically been known for vast quantities of oil. The leaders of Dubai recognized that oil reserves one day will be depleted. The continuing prosperity of Dubai would be found in becoming an international business center. International businesses are welcomed as are residents from all corners of the earth.
Dubai was once known as the country in the world with the largest number of construction cranes. They still abound as the city is filled with tall buildings, luxury hotels, and magnificent restaurants. Dubai once laid claim to having the tallest building in the world - Burj Khalifa, which rises 828 metres (2,717 ft). 163 Floors! The Chinese have built one slightly taller…and guess what…Dubai plans one a bit taller!! They also have what is claimed to be the largest mall in the world! And that includes an indoor ski slope!
In addition to my sessions I was able to visit the desert - incredibly vast and rich in its own fashion. I visited a very large camel racing complex. At that location there is an area containing brand-new cars and trucks. Since gambling is illegal in Dubai, your prize for your camel’s victory is take your choice of a new car! And in case you are wondering…In Dubai water is more expensive than oil!
My assignment there was to enhance the presentation skills of the employees. They are highly educated and exceptionally skilled in international business. As part of a multinational company, they are required to report regularly to senior officials - in English. My assignment was to improve the communications skills of their participants - not making them perfect in English. - but more confident.
